Big idea: Pride promises to lift you up, but it only sets you up for the fall. God lifts the humble.
Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, and its warning is aimed at a people who trusted in their height, their strength and their security. The weight of the message fell on verse 4: though pride soars like the eagle and nests among the stars, the LORD says, “From there I will bring you down.” Damon walked through three ways pride works against us:
- Pride will lift you too high. When our position makes us think we are above others, and even above God, pride has us.
- Pride will lie to your heart. Pride underestimates the consequences and overestimates the self.
- Pride will lower you in the end. God opposes the proud, and verse 4 shows that the fall is His doing.
